Emergency Preparedness & Evacuation
The Summer Village of Rochon Sands works with regional emergency management partners and emergency response agencies to prepare for emergencies that may affect our community.
This page provides residents, property owners and visitors with information about evacuation routes, emergency reception arrangements, emergency alerts and steps you can take before an emergency occurs.

Emergency Evacuation Routes
Primary Route — Sands Street to Highway 835
Normally the first evacuation route if it is open and safe to travel.
Secondary Route — Bay View Street East
May be used when directed by emergency personnel. The seasonal/emergency gate will be opened when required.
Tertiary Route — Provincial Park to Range Road 211
May be used when directed by emergency personnel. Emergency gates along this route will be opened only for an official evacuation.

During an Evacuation
- Follow instructions from emergency personnel.
- Use the route directed by emergency responders.
- Do not use emergency gates unless they have been opened for an official evacuation.
Community Hall – Emergency Reception Centre
The Rochon Sands Community Hall, located at 1 Hall Street, may be used as an Emergency Reception Centre when required during an emergency.
If the Emergency Reception Centre is activated, information will be provided advising residents when and where to report. Depending on the emergency, the Hall may be used to provide a safe gathering location, receive evacuated residents, provide information and coordinate other emergency supports.
Do not assume the Community Hall has been activated simply because an emergency is occurring. Follow instructions issued by emergency personnel or the Summer Village.

AED: An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is located on the exterior south side of the Community Hall in the veranda.

- Directions provided directly by RCMP, Fire Services or other emergency personnel
Be Prepared Before an Emergency
- Familiarize yourself with all three evacuation routes, not just the primary route;
- know how you would leave the community if one route were unavailable;
- keep vehicles reasonably fueled during periods of elevated emergency risk;
- have essential medications and important documents readily accessible;
- plan for children, seniors, people requiring assistance and pets;
- prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies;
- ensure household members know how they will communicate if separated.
Shelter-in-Place Emergencies
Some emergencies may require residents to remain indoors rather than evacuate. If authorities issue a shelter-in-place instruction:
- go indoors and bring family members and pets inside;
- close exterior doors and windows;
- turn off ventilation systems if instructed;
- move to an interior area away from windows when appropriate;
- monitor Alberta Emergency Alert and municipal communications; and
- remain sheltered until authorities advise that it is safe to leave.
